An Italian study shows that a small daily intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids may prevent hospitalization or death to persons suffering from heart failure. These fatty acids known as omega-3 are those that are found for example in fatty fish. The study published on August 31 in the journal The Lancet was presented to the meeting of the European society of cardiology at Munich. The study was conducted by 357 cardiology centers in Italy, over 7,000 people that have been diagnosed of heart failure. These problems lead to a gradual loss of the capacity of the heart to pump blood. Half the participants took a capsule of omega-3 and the other a placebo, doctors who treated know if it was one or the other.
The results showed that the mortality rate was 27% among those who took the fatty acids against 29% in the group “placebo”. A difference do not appear to be important but which is significant according to scientists. The hospitalization rate also seems to have been reduced among those who took a supplement of omega-3. In total, hospitalization or a death in less was found on 44 people who took the supplement for four years.
Previous studies have shown other benefits of omega-3 on cardiovascular problems, but also on sight or weaknesses in the brain associated with old age. These fatty acids are present in fish such as salmon, anchovies or sardines.
