Ozone, a toxic gas generated mainly by vehicular traffic, would be particularly harmful for the elderly and women, according to a study published by researchers at Harvard University, in the journal Epidemiology. After analyzing data on 2.7 million people died between 1989 and 2,000 in 48 U.S. cities, the study noted large disparities in vulnerability to air pollution by ozone. For example, when the rate of ozone increased by 10 parts per billion (ppb) in a city, the death rate increased by 1.1% more in people aged over 65 than among younger people. Among women over 60 years, rising from death increased by 0.58% more than in men the same age.
According to the authors of the study, vulnerability to peak ozone pollution be higher than in cities polluted by this little gas.
