World Alzheimer’s Day: the emphasis on family

This year, the association Alzheimer France has decided to conduct a campaign around the intergenerational link, families are the main supporters of the sick. This September 21 is also the starting point for a series of actions of awareness about the disease, carried out among children in schools.France Alzheimer Association has published a booklet intended to facilitate dialogue between parents and children about the disease and to provide support in the classroom. Designed for children 8 to 12 years, it is composed of texts and informative comic strip. Alzheimer’s disease affect about one million people in France, including 32,000 aged under 65. Estimates of the study “Paquid” estimate at 220,000 the number of new cases of the disease every year in France. Between the aging of the population and that of baby-boomers, the number of people suffering from the disease is expected to increase quickly, reaching two million in 2040. The Parliamentary Office for evaluating health policies (Opeps) valued at 10 billion euros the total cost of the disease in 2005. The average cost of a sick person Alzheimer’s is estimated at 26,000 euros for a person in an institution and 16,000 euros for a person residing at his home.
